Robert Rauschenberg, Ace, 1999. Intaglio in two colors. Mattatuck Museum

September 28 – December 7, 2025

In celebration of the artist’s Centennial, the Mattatuck Museum presents an exhibition of his Ruminations series (1999). The series consists of nine color photogravures which reflect back on Rauschenberg’s life, his friends and family, and the memories he held dear. Each of the nine prints in the Ruminations series is an introspective representation of important figures and moments from the early periods of Rauschenberg’s life, including his parents, his former wife Susan Weil, their son Christopher, John Cage, Jasper Johns, and many others. Created in the late 1990s, the suite layers photographs, handwritten notes, and collage-like compositions, offering an intimate glimpse into the artist’s creative journey.
