June 17 – November 1, 2026
The continuation of “Robert Rauschenberg and Asia,” organized by M+ in Hong Kong, opened this week at ILHAM Gallery, Kuala Lumpur’s premier modern and contemporary art institution. From June 16 through November 1, 2026, the exhibition returns Rauschenberg’s work to the country that hosted the final international presentation of the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange, ROCI MALAYSIA in 1990 at the Balai Seni Lukis Negara (National Art Gallery).
This exhibition marks the first comprehensive exploration of the artist’s many projects in Asia, and plays a key role in of the worldwide celebration of his centennial in 2025-2026. Rauschenberg traveled regularly to Asia, finding fresh inspiration for his work and making connections with artists, artisans, critics, and patrons across the region. On view in the exhibition will be “Iban Parade (Perarakan Iban) / ROCI MALAYSIA” (1990), one of the works inspired by and featuring photographs Rauschenberg took during travels throughout the country in 1989. In addition to paintings, the show highlights drawings, photographs, and editions Rauschenberg made during his travels.
